Understanding and Dealing with Societal Conflict

Difference and disagreement are marked features of contemporary western societies. They range widely from disputes about ethical issues such as abortion, euthanasia or genetic engineering, or social ones such as marriage and family life, recreational drugs, or capital punishment, through to fundamental political and constitutional issues, as in the recent US general and presidential election, or the UK Brexit referendum vote. How should we understand such disagreements?
