Sports and Contemplation
The Agora Institute hosts a weekly reading group in which fellows come together with local professionals to discuss important texts and ideas. Politics, economics, philosophy, theology, and art have been among the subjects of discussion in the past. The reading group provides all of its participants with the unique opportunity to engage individuals with vastly different life experiences and perspectives, and to become locked in conversation with one another despite their competing views. Whether reading Solzhenitsyn’s provocative short stories or Roepke’s principles of economics, the Agora Institute believes that the reading group serves as one small way in which the virtues of civil society are formed: by gathering together to participate regularly in the hard but rewarding work of civil discourse.
Following last semester's study of "Work", this Spring reading group will discuss the topic of "Play." What is play and what role does it have in the creation of a free and civilized society?
