Speaking Religious Truth to Political Power
This fall, the American Values, Religious Voices: 100 Days, 100 Letters campaign will be published as a book by University of Cincinnati Press. Created by Andrea Weiss, Campaign Coordinator and Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost at the Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion, and Lisa Weinberger, Creative Director of Masters Group Design, this project is the result of a unique partnership between a Bible scholar and a graphic designer who teamed up in the aftermath of the 2016 election. For the first 100 days of the Trump administration, American Values, Religious Voices sent letters from scholars of religion across the country to the President, Vice President, and Members of the 115th Congress. The letters articulated core American values connected to our diverse faith traditions. Nearly two years after the election, the letters prove the how important it is to “raise your voice with power” (Isaiah 40:9), demanding that our elected leaders maintain the values and institutions have made our nation great. Our event features four of the religious scholars who wrote letters for the book:
Adnan A. Zulfiqar, Assistant Professor of Law, Rutgers Law School
Murali Balaji, PhD, Diversity Consultant/Lecturer Annenberg School for Communications, University of Pennsylvania
Ellen M. Ross, Ph.D., Howard M and Charles Jenkins Professor of Quakerism and Peace studies, Department of Religion, Swarthmore College
Rabbi Andrea L. Weiss, Ph.D., Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost, Associate Professor of Bible, Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion
They will read their letters and engage in a panel discussion discussing the aims of the book. Its timely release comes just days before the midterm elections.
